On a West German Autobahn, Robert plummets from a bridge and is hospitalized. As he recovers, he flashes back to a Bulgarian holiday where he met Jutta and her uncle Lothar, who’d ordered a West German passport to smuggle her out of the DDR. Back home, Robert and Jutta marry and have a daughter, Anna, but Jutta still yearns for the West. Lothar arranges their escape: Robert, Jutta, and Anna hide in a car trunk, but delays doom Anna. At the border, a grief-stricken Jutta blames Robert; distraught, he leaps from the bridge, surviving to face his guilt. A film banned in the GDR.

Each year in June, Bavarian housewife Elke Richter visits family in Halle, in the GDR. There she meets family friend Gregor Pohl, a married carpenter, and they begin having an affair. After her family stops the annual visits due to the husband's promotion in the communist regime, the adulterous couple arranges to meet on other holidays. After Gorbachev's Glasnost leads to the fall of the Iron Curtain, everything changes, and Gregor chooses to emigrate to Canada.

Up-and-coming writer Junghans leads a rather dull life.

Grown-up contestants have to answer to ten questions of school knowledges of the first five grades. In this "classroom" there are also 5 students at the age of 10-11, who the contestant choose one and becomes his "bank-neighbor". So, the bank-neighbor can help him, if he doesn't know any more. In detail the jokers are: "Lard": The contestant can have a look to his bank-neighbor, what he has written and can decide, if he take his answer or another one. "Crib": The contestant has to take the answer of his bank-neighbor. And the "Last Rescue": If the contestant has given an answer and it's wrong, his bank-neighbor can helps him to stay in the classroom (in case of his bank-neighbor has the right answer). If he has no joker any more and he answers wrong, or he leave the school instead to answer, he must to say "(translated:) That knows yet every child, but I just not".
